By now you've probably figured it out, but for other newcomers, you should be able to simply open the file in whatever version of photoshop, photoshop elements, or lightroom that you're using. If it doesn't recognize it, then you need to download the latest camera raw definitions, particularly if your camera is a newer camera. (It is possible that some newer RAW formats might not be compatible with older versions of the software no matter what. )
